Covid-19 pandemic – statement from Sudbury Labour Councillors

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the way we support you as your local Councillors will unfortunately have to change in the months ahead. This statement sets out what we are going to do to minimise the risk of infection and ensure that we can continue to help every resident in need. We will regularly update it as the situation evolves. It’s more important than ever that we support the most vulnerable in these difficult times, so we‘ll be stepping up our work in the community – but we need to work in a different way.  To do this, we need your help more than ever to ensure we can support those who need assistance.

1. We’ll be continuing all three of our monthly surgeries, but we’ll be be moving from face-to-face to telephone and video appointments

As you will know, we currently run three drop-in surgeries a month, on a first-come first-served basis – you can find the times here. We’ll continue to hold surgeries at these times, but as pre-booked telephone calls and video conferences instead, rather than face-to-face meetings.  If you’d like to speak to us during these hours, please contact us in advance to book an appointment. We’ll then call you at a mutually convenient time. If you have limited minutes or data, or use a sim card, please do not feel the need to call us yourself – we can always call you ourselves during your time slot to save you money. Finally, please do not feel the need to wait for a surgery to report issues. As always, you can get in touch with us by phone, email or text if you ever have any issues – we’re here to help all year round. Surgery-Notice-Sudbury-Labour-1

2. We’ve got involved in WhatsApp groups across Sudbury, to make it easier for you to report street issues

We won’t be doing the regular walkabouts we usually do across the ward in the volume we used to, and our door-to-door campaigning will also halt for the forseeable future, so we need your help more than ever to report any street issues. Therefore, to make it even easier for people, we’ve set up a Sudbury-wide public WhatsApp group for Covid 19, so people can get regular updates from us about the pandemic. We’re also involved in numerous street and neighbourhood-level WhatsApp groups so people can easily report street issues, anti-social behaviour and other issues. Please reach out to us if you’d like us to join a local group.

3. We’ve set up a Sudbury Covid 19 Mutual Aid Group, so we can all work together to support residents in need

If you are in need of support, or want to devote your time to help people near you, you can get in touch with the group in a variety of ways:
  • Join theWhatsApp group by getting in touch with us
  • Email at
  • Call or message us on 07770 678714
We also have leaflets you can put in your homes to spread the message about the support available. Sudbury-Mutual-Help-Group.pdf
We’ll be coordinating local activity and we’ve been overwhelmed by the offers of local support we’ve received thus far. However, for obvious reasons, you’ll appreciate that volunteers aren’t able to help every vulnerable resident and we need to be extremely careful to protect and safeguard people’s information – so please do bear with us as we navigate these issues.

4. If you are able, please consider supporting local organisations which are in need of assistance during this period

We will update this page with more information as and when we receive it, but for the time being, the Sufra foodbank in Stonebridge park has issued a coronavirus emergency appeal due to the pressures caused by stockpiling. Please support them if you can. Finally, we would like to wish you and your family all the best during this difficult period. Please stay safe, and remember to stay regularly updated on the latest public health advice on coronavirus. Cllr Thomas Stephens Cllr Mary Daly Cllr Saqib Butt
